What is a Domain Name?

A domain name is the web address for your website or web page. Domain names consist of words ,numbers, periods or hyphens. We use domain names as a way to direct visitors to our website. An example of a domain name is www.conversionjunction.com . A registered domain name is the actual name you reserved when applying for a website, for example; conversionjunction.com. The difference between you domain name and your domain url is that your url starts with a http: for example: http://conversionjunction.com. Computers use numbers to communicate, a domain name is mostly comprised of letters because it is easier for us to remember a word instead of series of numbers such as ;66.258.1.2458.24.

What does FTP stand for?

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol, FTP is the system used to transfer information from your hard drive to publish to the internet. You can prepare the text for your website or the design right from your home computer, but to transfer the file you created you will have to access the FTP server within your web host to upload the file. Once your file is properly transferred then your web host will be able to make your website live for viewing.

What is CPanel?

Cpanel is the control panel for your website. You can control every aspects of your website through you CPanel. You can add new pages through FTP, set up your email, autoresponder, change the color of your web pages, size of the text and many more functions. CPanel at first glance can be a little confusing, but most web host provide their users with flash tutorials on how to manage their CPanel. Hostgator has some great instructional flash tutorials on CPanel.

What is Bandwidth?

Bandwidth is the amount of data transferred from one server to another. Most hosting providers set limits on the amount of data transferred, or bandwidth. The higher your bandwidth, the larger amount of traffic your site can handle at one time. On the Internet, it is usually expressed in bits per second. It is important if you expect a huge amount of traffic to make sure that you web host allows enough bandwidth space or your site will crash, which may cause you to lose a lot of business. If you are expecting a huge amount of traffic to your web site Yahoo Hosting has some great packages for larger size businesses.
